Matt Johnson, Eduserv

Biography

Matt works with research institutions and leading universities to identity and develop IT infrastructure and services that meet the changing needs of the research community. Key areas include the generation and storage of research data, (from dedicated HPC and storage clusters through to multi-tenanted cloud-based services), security of research data (in a world where data privacy is high on the agenda), and the benefits (and challenges) of hybrid IT infrastructure. Previously Matt was responsible for the design, development and implementation of Eduserv's infrastructure products. He led the design and implementation of its cloud infrastructure, and was the lead architect of Eduserv's 'Government Ready Platform', a resilient multisite virtual platform providing fully managed hosting and data storage services to a number of central government departments

Abstract

Surviving a DDOS attack

In 2012 a number of government websites, including one hosted by Eduserv came under a concerted DDOS attack from an online activist group. This presentation will provide a real-life insight into the attack methods used, traffic profiles through the period, the range of countermeasures deployed, and the "after-action" report detailing lessons learned
